Sen. Bukola Saraki to be arraigned for stealing N11 billion while still Kwara state governor.

Kwara State former Governor, Sen. Bukola Saraki, will soon be arraingned in court over fraud cases involving over N11 billion. According to the police Commissioner Special Fraud Unit in Lagos, Mr. Ayotunde Ogunsakin, during a press briefing with journalists on Wednesday, the delay in the case is to ensure that the investigation is thorough so that the prosecution is not thrown out by a court on a technicality. Cynthia Osokogu: CCTV must be in every hotel- NTDC Boss

Mr. Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, the Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), has called on hoteliers in the country to improve security in their hotels by providing close circuit TV camera in the interest of their guests and their business. He said this yesterday while speaking with journalists in Abuja. Runsewe stated the call became necessary in view of the recent murder of a post graduate student of the Nasarawa State University, Miss Cynthia Osokogu, by her Facebook ‘friends’ in a Lagos hotel. “But for the CCTV, it would most probably be difficult to trace the suspects who are now being held by the police,” he said. The NTDC boss reminded hoteliers to also register with the corporation in accordance with the law, revealing that from NTDC investigations only four of the five hotels patronized by the alleged killers registered with the corporation. The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Thursday emerged the 81 "World's 100 Most Powerful Women," in a survey conducted by Forbes. The finance minister who emerged in the politics category, was 87th in 2011. Only three African women were on the list. Okonjo-Iweala, according to the list obtained on the Forbes website was listed among Joyce Banda, President of Malawi (71) and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberia's President (82). CBN to introduce N5, 000 Naira Note by 2013 - Sanusi

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, on Thursday, 23rd August, made public the introduction of a new currency series under which the existing denominations of N50, N100, N200, N500 and the N1,000 notes will be redesigned with added security features. CBN Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, told newsmen at a press conference in Abuja that N5,000 note would also be introduced, while the lowest denominations of N5, N10 and N20 are to be coined. The N5,000 note he said will have the images of three Nigerian women and is to be introduced in 2013, in Abuja. NUPENG suspends Strike scheduled to start Today ( Thursday).

The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers on Wednesday said it had suspended the nationwide strike that the union members was planning to start today, Thursday, 25th. The Union's President, Mr. Achese Igwe, who made the announcement said the ongoing s trike in Abuja would however continue. The latest development came on the heels of an intervention by the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) in the ongoing face-off between NUPENG and the FG over the non-payment of subsidy claims to oil marketers. NUPENG had on Monday threatened to embark on a nationwide strike on Thursday if the government did not to pay subsidy claims to marketers. There are now indications that the chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, may take legal action against Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, following his remarks against him and a National Commissioner, Dr. Ishmail Igbani, during the July 14 governorship election in the state. Update - Police have arraigned three suspects before a Magistrate Court in Bauchi state for allegedly removing the two kidneys of 25-year-old Abubakar Buba. Some weeks ago, we had reported a case of a missing person, Cynthia Osokogu, the only daughter of General Frank Osokogu (rtd). It is now proved that Cynthia's body was discovered in a Lagos morgue a month after she was declared missing. There are indications that she could have been murdered by her facebook acquaintances. Already, six persons, among them two university students, a pharmacist and an employee of the hotel where the 24-year- old post-graduate student was murdered have been arrested. Investigation into the murder, as reliably gathered, revealed that Cynthia was strangled to death in the hotel by her assailants, who thereafter left with an undisclosed amount, her student identity card and phones. The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Mike Omeri, has urged Nigerians not to thwart the ongoing peace negotiation between the Federal Government and the Islamist sect, Boko Haram. Omeri’s call is coming at a time the Islamist sect in a recent statement obtained by the Voice of America (VOA) in Mecca, said it decided to initiate the peace moves in response to numerous public appeals for peace in the country. A jail break occured today at the Oko Medium Security Prison located in along Airport road, Benin, Edo State. Those who spoke to Breaking News Nigeria said that they said sounds of explosions and sporadic shootings arounding the area. No fewer than 12 inmates were said to have escaped. One of the eya witnesses had it that the inmates overpowered the prison security while others say some hudlums stormed the prison to release some members of their gang held there. A policeman shot and killed a 12 year old boy in Kano

A police sergeant attached to Gwale divisional station killed a 12-year-old boy identified as Hassan Muhammad. The trigger happy cop, identified as Laminu Adamu, was said to have fired a shot that hit and killed the teenager. Hassan died from the fatal injury on his way to hospital. The incident triggered pandemonium and violent protest in the area with an attempt to set ablaze the divisional police office, located in the municipality. The arrival of several plantoons of anti riot police aggrieved the locals however, good persuasion and restraint was used to avert a blood bath in the city bedeviled by security challenges. Koffi Olomide, one of Africa's most popular singers, has been sentenced to a three-month suspended jail for assaulting his producer. The rumba star, 56, was arrested after a fracas on Wednesday at a hotel in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Correspondents say the courtroom was packed to see the star, who leads the Quartier Latin band. Earlier this year, he had denied charges of raping three of his dancers in France. The altercation with his producer, Diego Lubaki, was over a debt of 3,000 euros ($3,680, £2,345), the court heard. Mr Lubaki said he wanted to drop the charges, but the judge continued the trial. Meanwhile, four people were killed in the renewed cult war at different points within Enugu capital city on Thursday, August 16th. Two were killed in the morning at Adelabu and Peter Okoye streets, Uwani area of Enugu while one was killed at Onuasata in the afternoon. Boko Haram Members killed by their own Bomb in Kaduna.

An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded around the Ahmadu Bello Way/ Lugard/Alkali axis in Kaduna, Kaduna State. Eyewitnesses have it that at least 3 dead bodies were seen at the scene of the blast. One of the eyewitness said that the IED, which was being transported by men believed to be members of the Boko Haram, detonated in transit, killing them instantly. The source further stated the loud bang of the blast shook the reidents of the area sending wares and windows flying, just as people fled the scene. A combined team made of up the military and local law enforcement have cordoned off the scene of the blast.

Academic activities shut down in ESUT as VC was kidnapped.

Enugu State University of Technology, ESUT Vice Chancellor, Professor Cyprian Onyeji, was yesterday kidnapped by unknown gunmen in front of the university gate around 11: 30am morning. Eye witnesses said the gunmen ambushed the VC and his police guards at the main gate of the university in Agbani, Nkanu West LGA of Enugu State, as he was returning to campus. Three of his police escorts were seriously injured in the gun battle that ensued during the kidnapping. After subduing the police escort, the gunmen dragged the VC's driver and orderly out of the car, jumped in and drove off with the VC. Prof. Onyeji’s whereabouts is still unknown as the kidnappers are yet to make their demands known. Meanwhile, all academic activities have been shut down in both campuses of the university as all offices and classrooms are under lock and key.

A Magistrate's Court sitting in Ikeja, yesterday sentenced a 45-year-old commercial motorcyclist and husband of two wives, Alabi Bakare, to five years imprisonment for raping three minors. Magistrate A. Isaac, who handed the verdict, said the sentence would be without an option of fine. He said since the accused had pleaded guilty to the offence, the court had no option than to sentence him as charged. The News Agency of Nigeria,NAN, reports that the accused, who was arraigned on August 8, had pleaded guilty to a charge of having carnal knowledge of the minors aged between three and five. Earlier, the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Barth Nwaokoye, told the court that Bakare raped the minors on August  3 at 7 p.m. at 19, Oluwakemi Street, Alapere, Ketu area of Lagos metropolis. Rivers State University of Science and Technolgy on Strike

The Rivers State University of Science and Technology(RSUST) has once again, gone on an indefinite strike action over the imposition of a new VC by the state government. Though the reasons have not been clearly stated, it is believed that the strike is as a result of the imposition of the Acting Vice Chancellor on the school. Students report that he lost in the criteria and followed not the due process and yet for political reasons the state governor imposed him on RSUST as Vice chancellor.

Madonna University free again from NUC suspension

NUC suspended the license for operation of all campuses of Madonna University (Okija and Elele), along side five other private universities early July, 2012. According to the commission, the suspension was aimed at correcting some abnormalities ongoing in these institutions as concerned with course accreditation, Students welfare, and so on. The efforts of the NUC however was misunderstood as managements of the affected institutions retorted to the media to claim that the NUC officials is against the schools. Some students of Madonna University claimed that the NUC was interested in receiving bribes which their school management was not ready to pay. These alledged claims made the public misunderstood the good intent of the Commission to “right the wrongs” in the schools. FG has declared Mon, Aug 20 and Tue, Aug 21 Public Holidays

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Monday, August 20, and Tuesday, August 21 as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Fitri  or Sallah celebration. This is contained in a statement signed by Mrs Anastasia Nwaobia, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior. The declaration on behalf of the Federal Government urged Nigerians to emulate the exemplary attributes of Islam which are “love, tolerance and peaceful co- existence amongst the people’’. The statement further advised Nigerians, irrespective of their religious beliefs, to use the occasion for sober reflection and pray for the peace, unity and progress of the nation “in its march to nationhood’’. Doctor Steals the Kidneys of a Patient in Bauchi

Police in Bauchi State have arrested a medical doctor, who allegedly removed the kidneys of a patient in his private hospital. Dr. Sani, the proprietor of Aminchi Clinic in Yakubu Wanka, Bauchi, was alleged to have removed the two kidneys of one Abubakar Buba from Bununu, who is currently lying critically ill in hospital on dialysis. It was gathered that he needs about N7 million for kidney transplant to survive. The 23-year-old Abubakar fell ill and was taken to the clinic by his parents. His condition was said to have worsened after the doctor allegedly carried out an operation on him. Father of the patient, Alhaji Buba, said “They asked me for N10,000 which they said was for drugs. After sometime, perhaps they understood that my son would not survive, I raised alarm. They now asked us to go to a hospital in Kano. A 43-year-old man, Uchenna Nwosu, recently pleaded with an Agege Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his marriage of eight years. The father of three accused his wife, Christiana, of being disobedient, nagging and assaulting him publicly. Kenya might break record and Host 2024 Olympics

Kenya has indicated its interest in becoming the first African country to host the Olympics. The country’s Prime Minister Raila Odinga said in London on Wednesday that Kenya will bid to host the 2024 Olympics. Mr Odinga said sub-Saharan Africa’s time to host the games had come as the region’s trillion-dollar economy was set to boom over the next decade. “Kenya had the confidence as far back as 1968 to consider bidding for the Olympics” said Kenya’s Prime Minister, Raila Odinga to the Financial Times. “That is the spirit we need to recapture. We need to bring back that confidence and say we can do it. It is necessary to take a look back at where are coming from and where we want to go, because we have been drifting for too long,” he said.
